This map shows the distribution of confirmed H5-infected dead birds found within the territory of Hong Kong since 2008. As depicted by graduated colours, most of the birds were collected from the New Territories, especially along the coastlines. This phenomenon is different from that in 2006-2007, when a larger proportion were found in urban Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

As shown by coloured symbols, two clusters of H5-infected dead birds were located in Lantau Island and Yuen Long. Most of the dead birds in the Yuen Long cluster were migratory birds found in the vicinity of Mai Po Nature Reserve. Along the north-western shores of Lantau Island, there was another cluster composed mainly of poultry. Overall, the natural landscape, human activities and direction of river flow might have explained the distribution and type of H5-infected dead birds in Hong Kong.

Data for the map were obtained from Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
