Since the beginning of the year 2020, a novel coronavirus (referred as 2019-nCoV or SARS-CoV-2) has spread from Wuhan to many parts of China, and Hong Kong is no exception. The new virus is spread in a similar way as influenza virus. In order to track the infection as well as monitoring the precautionary measures in the community, EcSS has added a few more questions to the weekly survey. Please kindly respond to these additional question items, and also refer your friends to join EcSS! Thank you for your support.

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy Year of 2020

There are three more weeks before 2019 comes to its end. It was quite cold last week and hope everyone is in good health! When infected with the influenza virus, symptoms like fever, cough, muscle pain may occur. Fortunately most of these illnesses are self-limiting leading to recovery in 2-7 days. However, influenza can be a serious illness to people with weakened immunity and the elderly. Winter is high time for influenza. Everyone should pay attention to the influenza situation, take care, keep healthy diet, do exercises and have adequate rest. Do not smoke and keep cheerful. Remember to go for vaccination. Keep up your good health!

Don’t forget to continue updating your weekly report and encourage your friends to join EcSS. Thank you!

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy 2018
While we warmly welcome 2018, Hong Kong has, at the same time, entered the 2017/18 Winter influenza season. The double threat of cold winter weather and high influenza activities is a cause for concern. Everyone should take care to keep warm. Influenza virus tends to circulate rapidly when people get together, especially during festive season like Chinese New Year. Remember to keep good ventilation when you are indoor and wash your hands frequently, exercise regularly. Attend to elderly people and children who may be more susceptible to medical problems associated with cold weather! If you are sick, take a rest at home and wear mask, maintain cough etiquette at all times so as not to transmit infection to others. Go for vaccination if you have not done so.

Initial exploration of data collected from the EcSS project have led to the publication of a research manuscript in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. The tracking of respiratory symptoms (for example cough) in households has been found useful for monitoring the progress of influenza seasons in the community in in Hong Kong. To a certain extent the onset could predate the occurrence of a season defined by laboratory surveillance.

Seasonal influenza vaccination, have you received it?

Every year, seasonal influenza peak occurs at around the time of the Chinese New Year. As it takes time for vaccine to become effective, it is good for now to have received vaccination to protect from infection and complications. The government recommends all adults aged 50 or above to vaccinate against seasonal influenza. For further details, please refer to http://www.chp.gov.hk/en/view_content/18881.html
Have you received the vaccine? How about your family members?
A gentle reminder: although vaccine can protect one from infection with main influenza subtypes, it does not mean that you won't get cold or cough after vaccination!
