Situation update as of 22 February 2021

After the SARS-coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), a new coronavirus virus (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in China in December 2019. Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is the name given to the medical condition caused by SARS-CoV-2. As of 22nd February 2021, more than 110,000,000 confirmed cases were reported affecting over 200 countries and places. According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) assessment, the risk of acquiring the SARS-CoV-2 infection at the global level is very high.

The map shows in graduated colors the distribution of the total number of cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases in Asia. Overall, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Pakistan, and Turkey have recorded a higher number of cases compared to other countries in Asia.

Currently, there are at least 70 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in trials. More than twenty countries in Asia have approved the COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use. Eight COVID-19 vaccines from different developers are used in Asia. The pie's color shows the available vaccines in each country, while the size of each pie shows the cumulative number of vaccination doses administered per 100 people, as of 22 February 2021. From the sizes of the pies, it can be seen that Israel and the United Arab Emirates have reported the highest proportion of vaccination coverage. Also, the United Arab Emirates has the highest number of options for COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccination aside, precautions for protecting from SARS-CoV-2 should continue: comply with social distancing regulation; wash hands frequently; avoid close and prolonged contacts with crowds in the community; wear a mask in accordance with the advice of the local health authority.

Data for the map were obtained from the World Health Organization, Our World in Data, and media reports.
